A Games for the Record Books

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics closed on February 22 with Norway rewriting the record books and the United States delivering one of its finest winter performances in decades. With approximately 2,900 athletes from over 90 nations competing across 116 events, Italy’s dual-host Games lived up to every expectation.

Norway’s Unprecedented Dominance

Norway topped the final medal table with a staggering 41 total medals — the most any nation has ever collected at a single Winter Olympics. Of those, 18 were gold, also a record. The driving force behind Norway’s haul was cross-country skier Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, who swept six events, all gold, setting the all-time record for the most gold medals won by a single athlete at a single Winter Games.

USA Makes History on Ice and Snow

The United States finished second overall with 33 medals, including 12 golds — breaking the nation’s previous Winter Olympics gold record of 10, set in Salt Lake City in 2002. The headline moment came in ice hockey: the U.S. men’s team claimed gold with a 2-1 overtime win over Canada, ending a 46-year wait since the legendary “Miracle on Ice” at the 1980 Lake Placid Games. Team USA’s total medal haul of 33 also surpassed its previous record of 28 from the 2014 Sochi Games.

Italy’s Home Heroes

Host nation Italy delivered memorable performances of its own. Speed skater Francesca Lollobrigida set an Olympic record of 3:54.28 in the women’s 3,000m to a rapturous home crowd, while short track legend Arianna Fontana became the first woman to win a medal at six consecutive Winter Olympics.

A Spectacle Embraced by the World

With 1.3 million tickets sold — representing 88 percent of total availability — and spectators arriving from every continent, Milano Cortina 2026 was both a commercial and sporting triumph. Ski mountaineering made its Olympic debut, and nine Olympic records were broken across the speed skating and short track programs, underlining how quickly elite winter sport is evolving.
