Belgium’s Stunning Extra-Time Comeback Sinks Senegal

Down and Seemingly Out

For 85 minutes, Belgium’s World Cup looked to be heading toward an early and painful exit. Goals from Sunderland’s Habib Diarra and Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr had Senegal firmly in control at 2-0, with the Lions of Teranga playing with the composure of a side ready to close out one of the tournament’s biggest upsets. Belgian fans inside the stadium had grown quiet, resigned to watching a golden generation’s World Cup end in the Round of 32.

Then, in the space of three astonishing minutes, everything changed.

Lukaku and Tielemans Force Extra Time

Substitute Romelu Lukaku, introduced specifically to change the complexion of the match, pulled a goal back in the 86th minute with a poacher’s finish from close range. Barely sixty seconds later, midfielder Youri Tielemans found the net himself to level the score at 2-2, sending the match into extra time and completely flipping the momentum that Senegal had built over the previous hour and a half.

What followed was a tense, error-strewn additional 30 minutes in which both sides pushed for a winner while visibly carrying the fatigue of a draining group stage. The breakthrough, when it arrived, was controversial. In the 117th minute, Tielemans went down under a challenge from Lamine Camara inside the Senegalese box. Referee officials took nearly seven minutes reviewing the incident on the pitch-side monitor before awarding a penalty, a decision that Senegalese players and staff protested vehemently.

The Latest Goal in World Cup History

Tielemans himself stepped up to take the resulting spot kick and buried it with ice-cold composure in the 125th minute, sending Belgium through with what is being described as the latest match-winning goal ever scored at a World Cup finals. The final whistle moments later capped one of the most dramatic knockout matches of the tournament, and arguably of the expanded 48-team era so far.

For Senegal, the result is a devastating way to exit a tournament in which they had matched, and at times outplayed, one of Europe’s traditional heavyweights. Diarra and Sarr’s goals will be remembered as part of a near-miracle that ultimately fell agonizingly short.

Seattle Awaits

Belgium’s reward is a Round of 16 date with the United States in Seattle, a match that now carries extra intrigue given the Red Devils’ demonstrated resilience under pressure. Coming from two goals down against a well-organized Senegalese defense suggests a squad capable of grinding out results even when the run of play does not favor them, a trait that could prove decisive as the tournament moves deeper into its knockout rounds. Belgium’s veteran core, playing in what may be a final World Cup campaign for several key contributors, has now shown it still has the nerve for the biggest moments when it matters most.
