India’s 124-Member Commonwealth Games Contingent Gets Send-Off

A Ceremonial Farewell in New Delhi

The Indian Olympic Association hosted a ceremonial send-off this week for the 124-member contingent representing the country at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, unveiling official kits ahead of a competition running from July 23 to August 2. The gathering marked the formal conclusion of months of selection and qualification across ten sports disciplines, with athletes, coaches and federation officials gathered to mark the occasion before departure.

Leading India’s campaign is a roster built around established Olympic medalists. Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, provisionally named to India’s 32-member athletics squad, headlines a group that also features Tokyo 2020 silver medalist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, decathlete Tajaswin Shanker and Olympic boxing medalist Lovlina Borgohain. Chopra’s place in the final squad still hinges on hitting the Commonwealth Games qualification standard of 82.61 meters in the days remaining before departure, a threshold he has cleared repeatedly in past competitions but must confirm again before Glasgow.

A Different Games Than Recent Editions

This year’s contingent travels to a Commonwealth Games reshaped by a leaner sport programme. Wrestling, badminton and cricket were all removed from the Glasgow schedule, a decision that drew significant criticism from Indian sporting bodies given India’s traditional medal strength in those disciplines. The absence of those three sports alone is expected to reshape India’s medal targets compared to previous editions, placing greater weight on athletics, weightlifting and boxing to carry the bulk of the country’s medal hopes.

Medal Expectations

Indian officials have pointed to boxing as a particular source of optimism heading into Glasgow, with Sakshi, Preeti, Ankush and Borgohain all identified as leading medal prospects in pre-Games assessments. Weightlifting, led by Chanu, and athletics, anchored by Chopra, round out the disciplines expected to contribute the largest share of India’s medal count.

Looking to Glasgow

With the send-off ceremony complete, India’s contingent now shifts its focus to final training camps before departure for Scotland. The Commonwealth Games will run alongside the closing stages of the FIFA World Cup and just weeks after the conclusion of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, placing Indian sport at the center of an unusually dense global sporting calendar this summer. For a federation navigating the loss of several traditionally strong disciplines from the programme, Glasgow represents both a challenge and an opportunity to prove depth beyond the sports removed from this year’s Games. Team officials say daily conditioning sessions will continue in Delhi until the squad’s scheduled departure, with a final review of injury status expected in the days before the opening ceremony in Glasgow.
