Mexico Break 40-Year Curse With 2-0 Win Over Ecuador at Azteca

A Night the Azteca Had Waited Four Decades For

Mexico stormed into the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 2-0 victory over Ecuador at a deafening Estadio Azteca, ending a 40-year wait to reach the knockout rounds on home soil. Not since 1986 had El Tri advanced this far in front of their own supporters, and Javier Aguirre’s side rose to the occasion with an intensity their South American opponents simply could not withstand.

The match kicked off after an hour-long delay caused by inclement weather over Mexico City, but any disruption to the rhythm did nothing to cool the hosts. From the first whistle they pressed high, moved the ball crisply and hunted every loose touch, pinning Ecuador back and feeding off the energy of a raucous crowd.

Quinones and Jimenez Deliver

The breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute. Julian Quinones cut inside from a quick transition and powered a shot into the top corner, sending the Azteca into raptures. Nine minutes later the lead was doubled. Ecuador defender Joel Ordonez was caught in possession, and Raul Jimenez pounced, exchanging a slick give-and-go with Quinones before rifling a finish into the corner of the net.

Two goals to the good inside the opening half hour, Mexico settled into a controlled performance. They slowed the tempo when it suited them, kept possession for long spells after the interval and rarely allowed Ecuador a meaningful route back into the contest. The South Americans returned from the break needing conviction, but their response lacked the sharpness required to trouble a disciplined home defence.

A Red Card Adds to Ecuador’s Misery

Ecuador’s evening unravelled further when Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie was shown a straight red card following an altercation with Mexico substitute Santiago Gimenez. The flashpoint flared as Hincapie appeared to cover his mouth while speaking during the confrontation, and the dismissal left Ecuador down to ten men and out of ideas.

The Road Ahead

Mexico now advance to a round-of-16 tie back at the Azteca, where they will face the winner of England versus DR Congo. For a co-host nation carrying the weight of expectation, reaching the last 16 in such emphatic fashion offers both relief and belief that a deeper run is possible.

Aguirre’s men have blended experience with the fearless energy of their forward line, and the Azteca crowd has become a genuine twelfth man. Ecuador, for their part, depart ruing a night when the occasion, the atmosphere and a rampant Mexico proved too much. The co-hosts march on, and a nation that waited 40 years for this moment is dreaming again.
