Norway vs England: Haaland’s History-Makers Face Tuchel’s Three Lions in Miami

Norway’s fairytale meets England’s pedigree on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, where a 5pm ET kickoff will decide the first semifinalist from the bottom half of the 2026 FIFA World Cup bracket.

Norway’s Uncharted Territory

Norway have never been here before. Stale Solbakken’s side reached a first World Cup quarterfinal in the nation’s history on the back of two milestone knockout wins, and one man has been at the heart of both. Erling Haaland scored a late winner against Ivory Coast in the round of 32 before a brace that sank five-time champions Brazil in the last 16. The striker has seven goals in the tournament and sits among the leaders of the Golden Boot race, and his wider numbers border on the absurd: 62 goals in 54 senior internationals and a scoring streak stretching across his past 14 competitive appearances for his country. Behind him, captain Martin Odegaard remains the architect, constantly probing for the pass that releases the tournament’s most lethal finisher.

England’s Depth and a Defensive Reshuffle

England arrive in a familiar position, contesting a World Cup quarterfinal for the 11th time, but they do so with a reshaped defence. Jarell Quansah is suspended after his red card in the win over Mexico, and a fit-again Reece James is expected to slot into a reworked back four. Thomas Tuchel’s side are unbeaten in five at this tournament and advanced through a 3-2 victory at the Azteca in which Jude Bellingham scored twice and Harry Kane passed Pele to become England's all-time World Cup scorer. With Bellingham’s late-arriving runs and Kane’s relentless finishing, England carry the deeper squad and the higher floor.

The Decisive Battle

The tie will be defined by whether England can do what Iraq, Senegal and Brazil could not: keep Haaland quiet. The encouraging news for Tuchel is that Norway are far less convincing at the other end, having conceded in all five of their matches at this World Cup. Analysts and bookmakers lean toward England, with one leading model giving the Three Lions roughly a 65 percent chance of advancing, but Gary Neville spoke for many when he urged caution, because Haaland can settle any match in a single touch.

For Norway, the occasion alone is historic, but nothing about their tournament suggests a team content with a brave exit. For England, a nation still chasing a first World Cup since 1966, the equation is blunter: survive Haaland, and a semifinal in Atlanta awaits.
