No sport hands out more medals in the pool-side drama stakes than swimming. At the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games (23 July – 2 August 2026), 56 medal events will be decided at Tollcross — 42 in swimming and 14 in Para Swimming — making it one of the biggest medal tables of the entire Games.
The Venue: Tollcross International Swimming Centre
Tollcross hosted unforgettable finals at Glasgow 2014 and multiple European and world short-course meets since. Its 50m pool and steep-banked stands create one of the loudest swimming atmospheres anywhere in the Commonwealth.
How Commonwealth Games Swimming Works
The Four Strokes
Every event is built on four strokes: freestyle (fastest, any style allowed), backstroke, breaststroke (the most technical, with strict rules on kick and touch), and butterfly (the most punishing). The individual medley combines all four in one race.
Race Formats
Distances run from explosive 50m splash-and-dash sprints to the tactical 1500m freestyle. Swimmers qualify through morning heats into semi-finals and finals, and relays add team drama where a single takeover can win or lose gold.
Para Swimming
With 14 medal events, Para Swimming is fully integrated into the Tollcross programme — part of the largest Para Sport programme in Commonwealth Games history. Athletes race in classifications based on physical, visual or intellectual impairment, so every final is a genuine contest.
Why Swimming Could Define Glasgow 2026
Australia, England, Canada and South Africa traditionally dominate the pool, but Scotland’s swimmers will have home water. With finals every evening in the first week, swimming sets the tone for the whole Games medal table.
