Few Commonwealth Games venues carry a name with more meaning than the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. From 30 July to 2 August 2026, it hosts 26 medal events in Track Cycling and Para Track Cycling at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games — four days of raw speed on the boards.
The Venue: Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome
Named after Scotland’s six-time Olympic champion, the velodrome sits within the Glasgow International Arena complex in the city’s east end. Its 250m timber track was built for Glasgow 2014 and remains one of the fastest indoor tracks in Britain.
How Track Cycling Works
Sprint Events
The individual sprint is a cat-and-mouse duel over three laps, often decided by a lunge at the line after near-stationary tactics. The keirin sees riders wind up behind a pace bike before a chaotic sprint finish, while the team sprint is a three-lap relay of pure power.
Endurance Events
The individual and team pursuit pit riders against the clock and each other over 4km. Bunch races like the points race and scratch race reward tactics and stamina — laps gained and sprint points decide the medals, not just the finish line.
Para Track Cycling
Para events include tandem racing, where blind and visually impaired riders pair with a sighted pilot — some of the fastest and most trusting teamwork in all of sport. Para Track Cycling is a headline part of Glasgow 2026’s record Para programme.
What to Watch For
Australia, England and New Zealand are traditional track powers, but Scotland’s riders will race on home boards with the Hoy legacy hanging over the track. Sessions are short, loud and relentless — ideal for first-time viewers.
