How Bowls Works
The Basics
Players roll biased balls (bowls) toward a small white target ball called the jack. The bias means bowls curve as they slow — reading that arc is the sport’s great art. After all bowls are delivered, the team with bowls closest to the jack scores one point per bowl inside their opponent’s best.
Formats: Singles to Fours
Medals are contested in singles, pairs, triples and fours. Singles is first to 21 shots; team formats play a set number of ends. Tactics shift constantly: attack the head with a drive, or draw another bowl in close and defend.
Para Bowls
Para Bowls is fully integrated at Glasgow 2026, with events for athletes with physical and visual impairments — visually impaired bowlers work with a director who describes the head. It’s part of the biggest Para programme in Games history.

Australia, Scotland, England, Wales and South Africa are the sport’s heavyweights, and Scotland on home rinks will fancy gold. Watch the final end of a tight fours match — a single last bowl can flip four shots and a medal.
