Netball is one of the crown jewels of the Commonwealth Games — a sport where the Commonwealth IS the world stage. At Glasgow 2026, netball runs over nine days from 25 July to 2 August at the OVO Hydro, one of the world’s busiest arenas.

The Venue: OVO Hydro

Part of the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) on the River Clyde, the Hydro also hosts the Games’ opening ceremony on 23 July. Its 12,000-plus capacity will make every centre pass feel like a cup final.

How Netball Works

The Basics

Two teams of seven contest four 15-minute quarters. Players can’t run with the ball or dribble — the game moves through fast, precise passing. Only two players per team (Goal Shooter and Goal Attack) can score, and only from inside the shooting circle.

Positions Explained

Each of the seven positions — GS, GA, WA, C, WD, GD, GK — is restricted to specific zones of the court. That structure creates netball’s signature style: one-on-one duels all over the court, with the wing and centre battles feeding the shooters.

Key Rules to Know

Defenders must stand at least 0.9 metres (3 feet) from the player with the ball. Once caught, the ball must be passed within three seconds. Break either rule and the umpire’s whistle hands over possession or a penalty pass.

Who Are the Contenders?

Australia and New Zealand have historically ruled Commonwealth netball, but Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls and England’s Roses have turned the top of the sport into a genuine four-way fight. Scotland’s Thistles will carry home hopes at the Hydro.
