One perfect throw can end it all. Judo closes out the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games programme at the SEC Centre from 31 July to 2 August 2026 — three days of explosive contests where a single moment of technique beats minutes of effort.
The Venue: SEC Centre
Judo takes over the SEC Centre for the final weekend of the Games, following boxing, bowls and 3×3 basketball at the same venue on the Scottish Event Campus.
How Judo Works
Winning by Ippon
An ippon — judo’s knockout — instantly wins the contest. It’s scored for a throw that lands an opponent largely on their back with force and control, a 20-second hold-down, or a submission from an armlock or strangle.
Waza-ari and Golden Score
A waza-ari is a near-ippon: two of them win the match. If scores are level after four minutes, contests go to golden score — sudden-death extra time where the first score or third penalty ends it.
Penalties (Shido)
Passivity, false attacks or stepping out of the area earn a shido. Three shidos mean disqualification — so there’s nowhere to hide, and fighters must keep attacking.
Weight Categories
Men and women compete across weight divisions from lightweight to heavyweight, each running as a knockout draw with repechage — meaning two bronze medals per category, just like boxing.
What to Watch For
England and Scotland have proud Commonwealth judo traditions, with Australia, Canada, India and South Africa in the mix. Home judoka on the final weekend, in front of a Glasgow crowd, is a script made for drama.
