Brisbane 2032: Six Years Out, Preparations Move Into Gear

Share:

From Vision to Action

With just over six years remaining until the Opening Ceremony, Brisbane 2032 organizers say the Games are shifting from planning documents into visible, on-the-ground progress. The International Olympic Committee has described the transition as moving “from vision to action,” pointing to growing public engagement and commercial momentum as evidence that the Australian city is on track despite the long runway still ahead.

An Emblem and a Sports Programme on the Way

Two of the most anticipated announcements for Brisbane 2032 are expected before the end of the year. Organizers plan to reveal the official Games emblem sometime in the third quarter of 2026, giving the event its first true visual identity. Later in the year, the IOC and International Paralympic Committee are expected to finalize decisions on the sports programme, a process that will determine which events beyond the traditional Olympic roster make the cut for Brisbane.

Lobbying for New Sports

That sports programme decision has already attracted lobbying from federations hoping to secure a spot. Australian rules football has emerged as a talking point after AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon acknowledged high-level conversations with Brisbane 2032 organising committee president Andrew Liveris about the sport’s Olympic future. Separately, the International Floorball Federation announced in April that it had opened dialogue with organizers about including floorball as an optional sport, joining a growing list of federations angling for inclusion on home soil.

Building the Infrastructure

Behind the scenes, the unglamorous work of infrastructure delivery is already underway. The Queensland government appointed Unite32, a joint venture between AECOM and Laing O’Rourke, as the delivery partner responsible for the Games’ venues and infrastructure late last year. Planning for the athletes’ village and competition venues continues alongside technical, operational, and financial assessments designed to balance athlete experience with long-term legacy value for the region, a governance-heavy process not unlike the IOC's recent handling of Olympic recognition questions such as Denmark's push for Greenland and the Faroe Islands to compete independently.

A Long Runway, A Familiar Playbook

Brisbane 2032 will run from July 23 to August 8, 2032, followed by the Paralympic Games from August 24 to September 5. That six-year runway is longer than most Olympic hosts get to plan with, and organizers appear intent on using the time to avoid the last-minute infrastructure scrambles that have plagued previous Games. Whether that translates into a smoother buildup than recent hosts have managed will become clearer once the emblem and sports programme are finalized later this year.
