Three attempts. Six lifts. One barbell that doesn’t lie. Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting bring 20 combined medal events to the SEC Armadillo at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games — Para Powerlifting on 24 July, then weightlifting from 26 to 30 July 2026.
The Venue: SEC Armadillo
The Armadillo’s steep auditorium was built as a concert hall, which suits weightlifting perfectly — this is theatre, complete with chalk clouds, roaring crowds and lifts that come down to a referee’s white light.
How Weightlifting Works
The Snatch
The bar travels from floor to overhead in one continuous movement. It’s the more technical of the two lifts — speed, timing and mobility matter as much as raw strength.
The Clean and Jerk
A two-part lift: the bar is pulled to the shoulders (the clean), then driven overhead (the jerk). Lifters move bigger weights here, and competitions are often decided on the final clean and jerk attempt.
Scoring and Bodyweight Categories
Each lifter gets three attempts at each lift; the best snatch plus the best clean and jerk make the total, and the highest total in each bodyweight category wins gold. Miss all three attempts in either lift and you’re out — no total, no medal.
How Para Powerlifting Works
Para Powerlifting is a single-lift contest: the bench press. Athletes with lower-limb impairments compete on bodyweight categories, and the strongest press wins. The best lift more than three times their own bodyweight — pound for pound, some of the strongest athletes at the entire Games.
Who to Watch
India and Nigeria have become Commonwealth weightlifting superpowers, with England, Australia, Canada and Malaysia never far from the podium. Expect national records to tumble under the Armadillo’s lights.
