The arena (formerly the Emirates Arena) in Glasgow’s east end shares its complex with the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome — together staging 40 medal events across gymnastics and track cycling during the Games.
How Artistic Gymnastics Works
The Apparatus
Men compete on six pieces: floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar. Women compete on four: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor. Each demands a different blend of strength, swing and precision.
The Competition Format
Qualification determines the team final, the individual all-around (best gymnast across every apparatus) and apparatus finals, where specialists chase gold on a single piece. One routine, no second chances.
How Scoring Works
Every routine gets two scores: a Difficulty score (the value of the skills attempted, open-ended) and an Execution score (starting from 10.0, with deductions for every wobble, bent knee or step on landing). Total score wins — so gymnasts constantly gamble between harder routines and cleaner ones.
What to Watch For
England and Australia have led Commonwealth gymnastics in recent Games, with Canada and Scotland pushing hard. Watch the vault for split-second explosiveness and the beam for the purest pressure test in sport: 10 centimetres wide, four minutes of tension.
