3×3 Basketball at Glasgow 2026: Rules & Wheelchair Basketball Guide

Share:

Half the court, twice the chaos. 3×3 Basketball and 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball hit the SEC Centre from 24 to 29 July 2026 at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games — the fastest, loudest, most street-flavoured sport on the programme.

The Venue: SEC Centre

3×3 shares the Games’ busiest venue with boxing, bowls and judo. With music between plays and games done in under 20 minutes, sessions feel more like a festival than a traditional basketball night.

How 3×3 Basketball Works

The Basics

Teams of three (plus one sub) play on a half court with one hoop. Games last 10 minutes — or end instantly when a team reaches 21 points. Shots inside the arc are worth 1 point; beyond the arc, 2 points.

The 12-Second Shot Clock

Just 12 seconds to shoot — half the time of traditional basketball. Combined with the rule that play flows on after a made basket (no stoppage, defence just clears the ball behind the arc), 3×3 never pauses for breath.

3×3 Wheelchair Basketball

Making its mark as part of Glasgow 2026’s record Para programme, 3×3 wheelchair basketball follows the same fast format — same court, same shot clock, same 21-point sudden finish — with chair skills and contact adding another layer of intensity.

What to Watch For

3×3 rewards ice-cold shooters and relentless engines, since there are no long benches to hide on. Australia, England, Canada and New Zealand bring strong programmes, but 3×3 is famously upset-friendly: one hot streak from the arc can beat anyone.

FAQs

How is 3×3 basketball different from regular basketball?

Half court, one hoop, three players, a 12-second shot clock, 10-minute games and a first-to-21 finish — it’s built for speed.

When is 3×3 basketball at Glasgow 2026?

From 24 to 29 July 2026 at the SEC Centre, alongside 3×3 wheelchair basketball.

How many points is a basket worth in 3×3?

One point inside the arc, two points from beyond it — so the “long ball” is proportionally more valuable than in the 5-a-side game.
